Usage

A/an with non-specific things	It’s a computer.
An (not a) if a word starts with a vowel (usually a, e, i, o, u.)	Give me an apple, please.
The with specific things which you and other speakers know	Open the door, please.
This/these to talk about things and people near you	— What is this? — This is a box of matches. You can take these apples.
That/those to talk about things and people far from you	Can you give me that pen, please? Those houses are new.
