Adverbs of frequency

Always, never, often, sometimes and usually are adverbs of frequency.

We use them with the Present Simple tense.

They describe how often something happens:

  • Always – 100%;
  • Usually – 90%;
  • Often – 70%;
  • Sometimes – 50%;
  • Never – 0%.

The teacher | Emily

T: Hi, Emily!
E: Hi, what’s up?
T: I don’t see your cat anywhere. How often does he run away?
E: Oh, he never runs away! I’m sure he’s inside the house.
T: OK. How often does he hang out in the bedroom?
E: Hmm, he sometimes hangs out there. But usually he is in the living room or in the dining room.
T: Hmm … I don’t see him here!
E: Well, my mom sometimes leaves food for him in the kitchen. Is he in the kitchen?
T: No, he’s not. How often does he hang out in the kitchen?
E: Always, when my mom is at home. But now … I know! He often sleeps in the attic. Check there, please!
T: OK. I’ll call you back.
